The problem

As the Baltic Sea’s quality levels have fallen, stricter requirements have been imposed on what may be discharged into the sea. The Port of Åhus is now the biggest container port in South-East Sweden and one of Southern Sweden’s most prominent bulk ports. Within the area are several different industrial facilities whose emissions are not allowed to go into the Baltic Sea. The Port of Åhus is therefore investing major resources in its work on quality and the environment – including the supply network. 

As the Baltic Sea is becoming increasingly polluted, the Port of Åhus is now required to take samples of the surface water they release into the Baltic. But when seawater levels are high, salt water enters their supply network, which results in the samples being misleading. 

Solution

WaStop® Inline Check valve

As it is extremely important that the samples can be trusted, the Port of Åhus has initiated a major project to protect the supply network from the incoming salt water. The solution is a WaStop DN300 non-return valve fitted on the outgoing pipeline in the well. If the sea water rises, it only reaches as far as the non-return valve, then it stops. This makes it easy to take samples from this well, as the sea water remains downstream thanks to the WaStop non-return valve.
